Contains records of the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees, also known as Youngstown Institute of Technology Board of Governors, Youngstown College Board of Governors, Youngstown College Board of Trustees, and Youngstown University Board of Trustees. Covers the timeframe 1927, when the institution was a "school of second chance" sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association, to the present day as it serves the community as a public university supported by the State of Ohio. The documents in this collection covering the period 1927 through 1952 were preserved by James L. Wick, Jr. They include correspondence, minutes of meetings, legal and foundational documents such as Youngstown College's "Articles of Incorporation", and other items of interest. YMCA documents pertaining to the development of the University are also preserved within the collection. Documents covering the time period 1974 through 2003 were maintained by Maag Library, as part of its closed reserve collection. They consist chiefly of the agendas and minutes of Board of Trustees meetings. The presidencies of John Coffelt, Neil Humphrey, Leslie Cochran, and David Sweet come to light, as do the evolving priorities of the Board itself. At present, a large gap exists in this collection. Records addressing the time period 1953 through 1973 are currently unavailable. At the time of this writing, the University Archivist is working to remedy the situation by acquiring copies of these missing records for inclusion in this compilation. Until such is accomplished, researchers are advised to contact the Office of the President, where a complete set of Board minutes are maintained.
